Our Story
PowerHouse Equine Services grew from one clear mission:
to solve the problems other approaches miss.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Renée Pickersgill (Equine Nutrition Specialist) and Joe Pickersgill (Therapeutic & Corrective Farrier), PowerHouse combines two disciplines that are rarely brought together - but absolutely should be.
Most practitioners look at the horse in pieces.
We look at the horse as a whole.
By integrating advanced equine nutrition, hoof analysis, farrier rehabilitation, and real-world case experience, PowerHouse Equine Services has become Ontario’s only unified nutrition-and-farriery rehabilitation team - a team dedicated to uncovering root causes, not managing symptoms.
A Different Way of Solving Problems
With decades of combined experience across nutrition, hoof mechanics, injury rehab, inflammation patterns, and behaviour clues, Renée and Joe have built a reputation for solving complex cases involving:
- chronic ulcers and digestive disorders
- unexplained lameness
- inflammation and metabolic imbalance
- repeating abscesses
- topline loss and poor muscle development
- weak, shelly, cracked, or distorted hooves
- behavioural issues linked to pain or nutrition
PowerHouse is known for providing clear answers, not guesswork and for helping owners understand why their horse is struggling and how to fix it at the source.
How We Work
We collaborate with veterinarians and trusted equine professionals when needed, but our focus remains on the two areas most consistently overlooked:
Nutrition drives health.
Hoof mechanics tell the story.
Together, these reveal a horse’s entire internal picture long before symptoms appear.
For Every Type of Horse Owner
Whether you’re a competitive rider, a new horse owner, managing a senior partner, or trying to finally solve long-standing issues, our goal is to offer:
- practical education
- evidence-based recommendations
- simple, clear implementation
- ongoing support that fits real barn life
We offer both mobile on-site consults and virtual support so every horse owner can access the expertise they need.
A Note on Scope of Practice
PowerHouse Equine Services does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe.
We work alongside your primary veterinarian and farrier offering nutrition and hoof-health guidance that complements your horse’s existing care team.

Renee speaks at clinics, teaches horse owners how to interpret hoof and nutrition clues, and produces professional educational resources for barns, riders, and equine professionals.

Joe Pickersgill
Therapeutic Farrier | Co-Founder, PowerHouse Equine Services
Joe is a therapeutic farrier with years of hands-on experience working on some of the most complex hoof cases. His work blends traditional farriery skill with advanced corrective techniques, biomechanics, and whole-horse assessment - allowing him to solve problems that often persist despite conventional approaches.
With a background that includes working alongside top farriers and performance barns, Joe has built a reputation for tackling the difficult cases: chronic abscessing, long-standing imbalance, underrun heels, thin soles, gait abnormalities, and horses who have struggled for years without answers.
Joe’s philosophy is simple:
Fix the cause, not the symptom.
Every trim and shoeing plan is designed to restore balance, improve biomechanics, and support long-term soundness, not just short-term improvement.
Joe’s quiet, observational approach helps him see what others miss. Clients appreciate his calm presence, clear explanations, and the immediate improvements they see in their horses’ comfort and movement.
Together with Renée, Joe co-founded PowerHouse Equine Services, Ontario’s only fully integrated nutrition and farrier rehabilitation team. This unique collaboration bridges the gap between hoof health, nutrition, inflammation, and biomechanics, giving owners answers and results they can finally see.
Joe specializes in:
• Corrective trimming & shoeing
• Chronic imbalance cases
• Laminitis & founder rehabilitation
• Navicular & caudal hoof pain
• Performance-limiting gait issues
• Abscess patterns & inflammatory hoof clues
• Hooves affected by nutritional imbalance
Joe’s mission is rooted in integrity, education, and real change:
“To help every horse move comfortably and correctly, and to give owners clear, understandable solutions that last.”
